Damage to tissues produces pain that underlies immediate protective behaviors as well as inflammation in which infiltration of immune cells to the injury site clears cellular debris and promotes wound healing. The signature of inflammation is the “tetrad response” of dolor (pain), rubor (redness), calor (heat), and tumor (swelling).
